FILM ABHI BAKI HAI MERE DOST...
Since the last 4 years The Oldest engineering college of the state has been incessantly fighting for a somewhat revered status(IIT) ,which if is granted will definitely give a whole new look to this monumental bastion of technical education, and for sure this battle for betterment is for the cause of a noble mission called "EDUCATION". Destiny has taken its toll on UCE,Burla bcoz it belongs to a pretty neglected state, void of visionaries and efficient politician, who neither could realize the potential of the Institute nor have the courage and desired efficacy to convince the CENTRE to provide UCE the RIGHT to grow over and above its present standard.
We have been the victim of CENTRE-STATE tussle, I mean a scapegoat to the political mismatch between LOK SABHA and VIDHAN SABHA.
We have been humiliated to the extent of being at the receiving end of dirty tricks(played by dallals) ,to be precise I mean the "PROMISE" by the STATE to grant the status of " DEEMED TO BE" University to UCE,BURLA within a max time of 4 calendar months from mid september. And as a token of assurance changed its name to something called ORISSA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY(nice name na!!! it rhymes with iit, nit, mit). This was the breaking news at that time. And now after "8 Calendar MONTHS " we are where we were. Its really very frustrating.
Hey,we did not at least want a NAME CHANGE("UCE" is sweet & means a lot to us).
But guys! its not the end ,kyunki FIGHT ABHI BAKI HAI. Be in touch with your alma matter(at least through www.alumniuce.com) to see the updates.
And now its upto you to merely see the change or "BE AN AGENT" of the change you want to see.
We all have “SOMETHING” in all of us to contribute to our college ,and we are engineer enough to unleash that something and make some value addition to it so that Will add another feather to UCE’s cap.

UCE wants IIT at Burla
On the view of the recent allotment of an IIT to Orissa by government of India; the associations of teachers, students and alumni of University College of Engineering (UCE), Burla have reiterated their demand to establish the prestigious institute here instead of any other parts of the state. “On the basis of the infrastructure available and geographical existence within a pool of industries all around and at the foot of the world famous Hirakud dam, Burla is the most befitting place for IIT,” said the presidents and secretaries of the above three associations here yesterday while talking to the media persons. Students, teachers and alumni associations aid that the demand is not new. They have been demanding to upgrade UCE Burla to IIT since 2003. Even the present chief minister Mr Naveen Patnaik, in the year 2003, recommended to the ministry of HRD in government of India and the ministry accepted the proposal. But with change of government at centre, the proposal couldn’t be materialized, recalled Prof PC Tripathy and Er Ashes Padhi, the president and secretary of the alumni association respectively. More so, the coastal parts has got a number of centrally funded institutes like NISER, IIIT, RRL, Institute of Physics, and the last one being a world class Central University. Hence for regional balance, an IIT at Burla would go in a long way to satisfy people here who for decades together have been grumbling over regional disparity, opined the students. If an IIT could come at Guwahati, what is the problem for Burla, they asked. UCE, besides having a rich legacy, already has an IIT-like character for its strong infrastructure, renowned teaching staff, research activities, alumni performances, collaboration with industries and institutions to fetch far-reaching R&D results. An IIT here could add to its credit, said Mr Venus Lenka and Mr Sujay Biswal, two students of the college. It is further learnt that union minister of state for rural developemnt Mr Chandra Sekhar Sahu has assured the alumni association to take up the matter with the prime minister to highlight UCE’s case for IIT. At the same time the three associations are meeting the chief minister for a suitable action at his end.

Teachers, techies seek IIT status
Association of teachers, students and alumni of University College of Engineering (UCE), Burla, have reiterated their demand for an IIT in Burla after Orissa received the Centre nod for the tech hub.
“Burla is the most suitable place for an IIT, if one takes into account the infrastructure available, the pool of industries around and the proximity of the Hirakud Dam,” said a UCE, Burla, teacher, while addressing the media today.
On Monday, the three concerned groups — teachers, students and alumni rooting for UCE, Burla’s, IIT status, — would meet the chief minister for a discussion.
Also, minister Chandra Sekhar Sahu has reportedly assured the alumni of taking up the matter with the Prime Minister soon.
The three groups (students, teachers and alumni) have been demanding for the up-gradation of UCE, Burla, since 2003.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik, in 2003, had recommended the same to the Union ministry of human resources development and the plan received a nod.
But, with a change of government at the Centre, the proposal couldn’t materialise, recalled P.C. Tripathy and Er. Ashes Padhi, the president and secretary, respectively, of UCE, Burla’s, alumni association.
The Burla well-wishers further argue that coastal Orissa has its fair share of centrally-funded institutes — NISER, IIIT, RRL and Institute of Physics.

UCE inches closer to get deemed university status
SAMBALPUR: The long-standing demand of the alumni and students of University College of Engineering (UCE), Burla, has been met with the varsity being registered under Societies Act on Tuesday. This would pave way for the engineering college to stake for Deemed University status.
It has been registered as Orissa Institute of Technology (OIT) at Sambalpur. The change in the statute of Biju Pattnaik University of Technology (BPUT) in the Assembly bifurcating OIT from under its ambit will follow. Only after ratification by the State Assembly, the OIT will move UGC for Deemed University status.
The Deemed University status would enable the Engineering College get more funds besides help in giving their existing infrastructure a facelift. The College is already bestowed with 200 acres of land and can acquire another 300 acres adjacent to the present campus if needed.

DEEMED UNIVERSITY or STATE UNIVERSITY ???
Having been a recent graduate of this INSTITUTION, I am fully aware of the problems being encountered by the Institute. The foremost being the step-motherly attitude of the BPUT, Rourkela. To fight this what the COLLEGE needs is COMPLETE Autonomy from BPUT which is only possible if the INSTITUTE is declared a DEEMED UNIVERSITY or STATE LEVEL UNIVERSITY for that matter. So if experts feel that getting the later(State Univ.) is easier then why not??

Turn UCE,Burla a State University
While students of the University College of Engineering (UCE) Burla are on war path to turn the institution as a Deemed University, educationists have suggested the state government to declare it as a State University.
It is easier for the Government of Orissa to declare UCE Burla as an Engineering and Science University, suggested an educationist who belong to Western Orissa.
An alumnus of UCE, Burla has also echoed the view on this line. Instead of pleading with the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), it is easier for the state government to pass a Bill in this regard in the Orissa Legislative Assembly (OLA), said he. Initially it will cost Rs.1.5 crore per annum at the most, said a Financial Advisor of the state government. Later the state government by appointing a hyper active Vice Chancellor like Devdas Chhottaray will be able to rope in huge funds from University Grants Commission (UGC).

Hunger strike by UCE students
Hunger strike by UCE students
SAMBALPUR, Oct. 8: After holding a peaceful dharna for five days and demanding a deemed university status for UCE, the students of the University College of Engineering (UCE) at Burla, which is 15 km from here, have decided to start a hunger strike from today. Twenty-five students of the college sat down in the hunger strike from dawn to dusk in order to intensify their demands, the sources said. Keeping the hunger strike in view, a staff council meeting chaired by the principal of the college Prof S K Sanyal was held to find possibilities so that the problem can be solved. Two senior staff and students would move to Bhubaneswar to monitor the progress in order to register this institution under the societies act, said Prof Sanyal. It has been further learnt that the government is pressurising the college authorities to declare sine-die to arrest the students unrest. But the college authorities did not agree to such a proposal since the students agitation and the hunger strike had been totally peaceful till today and the students have shown a high sense of discipline all throughout, the sources said. Even the police did not find it necessary to be present during the dharna carried out by the students, according to reliable sources. At the same time, the members in the staff council meeting also vehemently protested against the declaration of sine-die in the college. On the other hand, the University College of Engineering(UCE) students here are mentally prepared to face any situation and run a private mess outside the campus if an action like sine-die is forcefully imposed upon. The agitation, undoubtedly remained peaceful till today. But the students must not take such drastic steps when things are under progress. The registration of University College of Engineering(UCE) under the societies registration act is the main bottleneck,Prof. Sanyal, the principal of the college said. But the present industries secretary Mr Ashok Dalwai is taking an active interest in it, Prof Sanyal added. n sns
