Dear Friends !
I am going to share with you few
things those are on move as a countdown to Golden Jubilee Celebration of
our UCE.... pl forward this message to as many friends / seniors / juniors
who are alumni of UCE....
(a) IIT, Burla - Is it end of the story?
No, certainly not... IIT issue is very much alive.... In last Parliament
session, in Rajya Sabha, MP Mr Rudra Pani, raised the question. HRD
Minister Mr Arjun replied that UPA govt is considering all the recommended
proposals and UCE Burla is one of them... So, no hopes lost yet.... We are
reigniting the political will to throw its weight behind the demand... We
are talking to Orissa MPs to raise the question in Lok Sabha... One thing
is clear, if UPA Govt decides to give one IIT to Orissa, it will come to
Burla and only Burla... No competition exists for UCE within Orissa.....
(b) Should it be business-as-usual for UCE till it becomes IIT - as it
comes, when it comes?
No, independent of its IIT ambition, UCE Burla shall seek growth, glory and
development.... As many academicians and ex-principals have urged us, the
best step forward at this juncture is to apply for Deemed University
Status.... Among many, two criteria are important (i) adequate teaching
staff (ii) accreditation of the departments... You will be happy that
advertisements have been published.. Our Principal Dr Singh has announced
that he is committed to file our application for Deemed University status
alongwith filling of teaching staff and accreditation of departments...
Once deemed university, we shall get central aids, grants, projects and a
renewed identity....
(c) What role Alumni shall play?
I can see three roles in immediate future.... First, parent alumni body
needs time and contacts of yours... For example, it is becoming
increasingly difficult for us to go, stay and lobby at BBSR or Delhi.... We
urgently need core groups at BBSR and DELHI who will give time to see the
political figures / beaurocrats and pursue our case.... Pl come forward....
Second, 100% Placement in Golden Jubilee Year is our target.... A website
is under making by the CS students with guidance from few alumni (pl visit
uceburla.ac.in).... College placement brochure is also being remade now....
Initiatives are being taken to revitalize the T&P department.... We alumni
have to advance the Brand Equity of UCE and persuade our companies and
other sources to come for campus interview....
Third, we have to mobilize fund... We will raise golden jubilee fund of one
crore rupees and more in the Golden Jubilee Year.... There are 3 sources -industry, alumni and NRI alumni.... We are in touch with industries like
MCL, NALCO, INDAL, TRF, etc and getting good responses... We are also in
touch with Local MPs for contributing from their MP fund and also arrange
from pdf programs of industries.... Let us now contribute our own bit....
An account has been created in the name of UCE Golden Jubilee Fund, at SBI
- Burla with number 0110050187.... Please start pouring in your
contributions as individual or group.... Our acknowledgement letter will besent to you and name shall be published in our webpage.... We are going to
describe how your fund shall be utilized...
(d) Golden Jubilee Fund - How it will be spent?
The needs of the college are endless.... However, few projects have been
identified as the Golden Jubilee Projects... The foremost is a 2-storied
building whose one floor shall be dedicated for Internet Center with 100
nodes and other floor shall be A/C Seminar Hall with state-of-art
communication gadgets & modern furniture. The cost has been estimated at 85
lakhs... Besides, there will be many small infrastructure projects such as:
Golden Jubilee Memorial Gate
Boundary wall along our property line (to preclude unauthorised possession)
Renovation of wirings (lights & fans) / windows, etc of class rooms
Renovation of toilets of college & hostels - fully tiled & with modern
toilet gadgets
Modernization of college laboratories
Automation of Central Library
Renovation of hostel kitchen & dining hall - improvement in hygiene
Renovation of open theatre pendal ( in front of East Hostel )
Expansion of Alumni House
Installation of light fixtures everywhere
Cleaning the campus and creation of gardens, etc
You will appreciate that we need money for everything... So, please
contribute your bit and arrange sponsors... You can also contribute in
assets, in stead of money .... College needs many things - from PC to LCD
projectors to A/C to xerox machines to printers to refrigerator to scanners
to even cement & rod..... Please do whatever you feel you an do... Leave
your stamp, whether small or big, in developing the college...
(e) Give contributions to the Souvenir
We are going to publish a souvenir in February on the theme of Golden
Jubilee.... We invite articles from all of you which can be sent to me or
Prof Rakesh... In October's Industry Meet we had published articles of Mr
Sakti Panda, Mr Sanatan Mohanty and Ms LopaMudra Sahu in additions to 6
other articles from Burla / Hirakud... Send your articles which should be 1
or 2 page and should tell about your feelings and dreams about UCE.... What
makes UCE so special to you....
This souvenir shall help us to raise sizeable fund in the form of
advertisement ... Many well-placed alumni have assured us to arrange
advertisements in numbers... You all are requested to arrange
advertisements... There is also a provision of individual contribution to
advertisement.... You can publish your theme or message about UCE in one or
two lines along with your name, year, and present address by contributing
Rs 3000 /-.
(e) We must link all alumni across the globe with one UCE chain
Within Orissa, a team of 5/6 have been attending Alumni functions organized
by different subchapters... We have visited Rourkela, BBSR and recently
Angul.... We have tried to articulate the difficulties of college and
expectations from alumni.... We have engaged a database operator to enter
the personal details of all alumni whose data are available with us.... I
understand there are various year-wise group mails operating... I request
the moderators to forward all these information to me or Prof Rakesh....
Those who are staying abroad, please galvanize your network and ignite your
passions for the college... Every dollar or rupee you will be contributing
will go a big way in giving a new identity, a new future to your UCE....
