INFOSYS SPARK PROGRAM-6Th March 2010

We take this unique opportunity to thank all our alumni involved in organising the INFOSYS Spark program which was held on 6th March 10 at Infocity, Bhubaneswar. Special Thanks to Alok Bhai, Debakalyan Bhai, Sampad Bhai, Sriradha Bhai, Sandeep Bhuyan Bhai, Dhirendra Bhai, Rajesh Bhai, Khan Bhai, Jaya Bhai and Subhra Didi for taking all the pain to organize this event for us.

Our special thanks to Manoranjan Bhai ,Mahendra Bhai and Sandeep Bhai for interacting with us and giving us the guidance that we actively sought during the Spark event.

The whole program was given great importance by the college authorities. This can be noted from the fact that the mid-semester examination which was to be held on 6th March was shifted for this programme. Around 220 students from all branches of second, third and final years participated.

As the name â€˜Sparkâ€™, it really brought within as an insight of the software industry and its work culture. The talk was not only enriched in knowledge but also entertaining and exciting. The Group Discussion and the presentation was the most exciting part of the program. The whole program was focussed on the concept of team work.
It was a great experience to meet some of the alumni, who were so encouraging and made us feel at home. They also shared valuable experiences with us.
Spark was a really good start for enlightening our young minds. We definitely look forward to participate in more such programs in future. Hence, we request alumni from other organisation to invite us to such programs that would really benefit us all.

â€œTechnology must move from the portals of the universities to the streets in villages, fields of farmers and factories of small entrepreneurs,â€ said Governor M C Bhandare.
Addressing the gathering at the first convocation of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla, he said universities mirror the trends of society and are pointers to the degree of discipline and progress of a community.
Moreover, universities play a vital role as they are training centres for future generation to inculcate values and ethics in them, he remarked.
Though Orissa was culturally the richest in the country and also rich in minerals, unfortunately it continues to be economically backward as poverty and illiteracy are the major hurdles on path of development of the state, Bhandare added.

The placement figures for the current year have been average. So far, in spite of recession we have been able to achieve (146 out of 290) through 12 companies which is good to some extent, but we are always targeting for the 100% landmark.

It is not a new idea but wanted to share with you all because I do not see a Batch Snap. The idea here is to have Batch snap for every Branch when they Pass out. In this Faculty Memebers of respective Branches and students can be photographed together.

Along with Galaxy every one would have a Batch Snap to cherish. This is another activity which our Alumni Association should facilitate.

VSSUT to get facelift before first convocation

The Burla-based University College of Engineering (UCE) is all set to get a facelift before its first ever convocation after being re-christened as VSS University of Technology (VSSUT) bestowed with a unitary status. â€œAs a university, it has completed one year and the achievements in this short span are no less,â€ said its first vice-chancellor Prof Deba Kumar Tripathy exuding confidence that it will see more bright days ahead with remarkable achievements in science and technology.

Since both large and medium scale industries are coming in good numbers all over the State and particularly surrounding this technical university, more job-oriented courses will be opened soon to create employment avenues for the students. The new courses will be water resources management, industrial power control and electric drives, material technology, manufacturing system engineering etc, informed Tripathy.

He also informed that all the vacancies in teaching and non-teaching posts would be filled up soon to convert this age-old institution to a full-fledged university. Simultaneously, advertisement has already been made in different newspapers and after the Board meeting, the process of recruitment would be initiated, Tripathy informed further. 146 students have already been selected for various companies through campus selection and more industries were to land here soon, he added.

On the forthcoming convocation on February 25 slated to be graced by the Chancellor cum Governor MC Bhandare, Tripathy informed that efforts are being made to give the entire campus a total new look by naming the campus as â€˜Siddhi Viharâ€™ and the hostels after the Saptarshi Mandal.

Talking about the achievement of the students, Prof Prakash Chandra Swain said that the students of the university have stood first in the Robotic event at IIT Kharagpur recently. At the same time, it had successfully organised Samavesh-2010 with 2500 engineering students belonging to different engineering colleges all over the State. â€œThere is possibility of getting Rs.10-20 crore aid from the World Bank for research activities,â€ Swain informed.

An alumni meet along with general body meeting is going to be organized on 17/01/2010(Sunday) at VSSUT Burla in Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall. All alumni members are requested to attend the meet to refresh their past memories by participating in the event. Annual Alumni Meet at BBSR- A memorable event

Dear Alumni,

As we all know that the Annual Alumni Meet of Bhubaneswar Chapter was held at the Institute of Engineers yesterday.

Those who were present yesterday, must have witnessed a nostalgic day filled with memories. It was very enthusiastic to see our esteemed alumni from various batches present in such large numbers along with their family. This was made equally interesting by the presence of students from our college who presented an excellent cultural show and remembrance videos.

Major Prof. P. C. Pattanayak, retired faculty of UCE Burla, was the chief guest for the day.

1970 batch students were felicitated yesterday. It was heart whelming to see their spirit even at this age when almost all of them have already seen 50 glorious years in their lives. After all, Once a UCEan.. Always a UCEan..!!

We had the privilege to have esteemed Ex-Professors of our college of the likes of Prof. G. D. Sharma, Prof. B. S. Patro, Prof. P. C. Pattanayak, Prof. L. K. Misra, Prof. Swarup Mohapatra, Prof. Srikanta Pattnaik and many more; all taking the stage to speak on the humor side of their days spent at UCE and singing to give a competition to the students of the music band. The students have traveled more than 300kms all the way from Burla by bus accompanied by Prof. Prasant Kumar Pradhan(lecturer-Mechanical Engg.) to perform on this day. Prof. Rabi Mahapata (Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science, Texas A&M University) a distinguished alumnus of UCE, gave a strong sense of UCE's presence in the global arena and his words were no less motivating either.

BBSR Chapter has initiated an excellent gesture of awarding final year students who were toppers in the 3rd Year. They were all presented with mementos and watches as a token of appreciation for their exemplary performance along with mementos for the cultural band. The watches were solely sponsored by Er. Prasanta Kumar Acharya, 1987 Civil Batch.

This was followed by lunch, where everyone got a chance to smile and speak their heart out hilariously to the rest of the UCE fraternity.

Overall it was a very enjoyable day.. The presence of students at the alumni meet added an extra flavor to the event and made it even more lively and enjoyable. A day when we could all be proud to know each other and sail back to the college days once again..

Brief Excerpts from VC's Address in Alumni Association Welcome Ceremony

The VSSUT Alumni Association's Welcome Ceremony organized on 25th October 2009(Sunday) was a grand success. The 10-points action plan of our Vice-chancellor as expressed during the occasion received a loud applause from the audience.

(1) VSSUT is going to organize its First Convocation to award degrees to its 2009 batch graduands in December -2009/January-2010 in the auditorium with an invitation to a reputed personality from the country to deliver the convocation address as Chief Guest.
(2) A Webgroup with teachers and students be formed to develop and maintain our University website to make it one of the best website in the world.
(3)Construction of one 600 seated Boys hostel and 60 seated guest house.
(4) A digital library and 24X7 internet connectivity in the university campus, students hostels and staff quarters.
(5) Appointment of 39 new teaching faculties in next three months time and Phone, PC and Internet facility in individual faculty office rooms.
(7) Revision and Up gradation of Curriculum taking IIT-Kharagpur as a model.
(8) A Big Notice board at the Entrance near Golden Jubilee gate for coverage and information of all events of the University.
(9)Construction of A Big bounded campus with New staff quarters.
(10) Construction of another big auditorium with 2000 capacity.

VSSUT to introduce textile engineering soon

Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology is planning to introduce textile engineering in the institution to strengthen and study of the world famous Sambalpuri fabric. This was disclosed by the vice chancellor of the university Dr. Deb Kumar Tripathy in an exclusive interview with TOI on Friday. Dr. Tripathy joined as the first vice-chancellor of the university on Thursday.

â€œBurla engineering college is considered to be the oldest engineering college of the state but it remains in the sideline because of the various reasons. Thanks to CM Naveen Patnaik for giving University status to the institution. Our priority will be to make the institution as one of the best of the country and for this we are planning to introduce few new branches of engineering courses. Textile engineering is one among them which will help to strengthen the development of the Sambalpuri fabric. We also plan to introduce Nano-science technology, Bio-medical engineering and surgical engineering soonâ€, the vice chancellor Dr Tripathy told.

According to him, several modification and changes are to be taken place in the infrastructure of the institution once it becomes university. But since it requires lot of expenditure we want to change it in phase manner. â€œI am meeting the industry secretary soon to place our immediate requirement. I am hopeful the government would give proper attention to solve the problem of the institution. We have shortage of faculty members. About 44 new faculty members are required immediately. So we advertise this in our website and soon we are able to fill up the postsâ€, Dr. Tripathy told.

Students Welocme VC - A report

Professor Deba Kumar Tripathy is dreaming to make the Vira Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), a global institution.And the Vice Chancellor of VSSUT strongly feels that the institution has the potential to be a global player.So he opened his cards on 21 October here in front of the students, who echoed their VC in a big way.He said "i am amazed at the way you students correlating with me and it is by this mutual co-operation we can improve things in my 2 years tenure."

His words were really encouraging and showed us the glimpse of the bright future we can have, said a student. Lastly VC said "lets work together to bring the lost glory of UCE back and make the most of it to make its image global."

Students shared their views, opinions, problems etc with Prof. Tripathy.Some of the final year students draw attention to some of the very crucial points.
The points of concern were as follows :
Acquisition of the land surrounding VSSUT campus , cleared by the Water Resource Dept. at the earliest.
Improvement of the basic infrastructural requirements like well furnished classrooms & laboratories, electricity , drinking facility, proper transport facilities etc
Appointment of adequate faculty members and laboratory assistants and filling up the vacant senior faculty posts in all departments was requested.
Complete renovation of the Central Library Facility with computerization and issuing at least a few international journals.
Establishing another fully equipped Seminar hall with higher capacity
Renovation of the AVC with Integrated Light & Sound System
Proper maintenance of the college website with a student database and log in facility
Availing internet facility throughout the campus with 24X7 service was asked for.
There are also some of the issues which students think can be improved upon like
Developing a Students' Activities Center (SAC) like in IITs comprising of all student activities.
Encouraging inter college participation in various events
Opening a night canteen in the campus and development of the hostel and mess facilities, was demanded.
ATM & Bank Extension in campus was also requested.
VC said all these aspects have been included in the Development Plan of the Varsity.
Prof.Tripathy said that our Alumni Association has always extended their valuable and timely support which is remarkable.
They have to play a major role in turning UCE to VSSUT on global map, said the VC.

Condolence for One of our Departed Alumnus

One of our Alumni Late Er. Suresh Kumar Lath, 1971 Batch, Mechanical Engineer passed away on 19.10.2009 at 10.00 AM at Rourkela due to heart attack.

He was an Industrialist having his own indstry- Techno Industry at Rourkela, a Rotarian and a Social worker.

Er. S.K.Purichha, 1971 Batch, GM, SAIL, Er.Brahma Mishra, 1979 batch, and Er.Satyajit Pati, 1980 batch and Er. Harijit Singh, 1981 Batch , Alumni, Rourkela Chapter attended the flowring tribute in his residence and his cremation.

Alumni Association, UCE / VSSUT, Burla pray God for his soul to rest in peace and give strength to his family members.

Alumni Association plans to prepare a vision document for future development of VSSUT

The VSSUT alumni association will focus on preparing a 'Vision Document' based on alumni feedback and suggestions in next 2 months time. The 'vision' is set upon the measures to suggest VSSUT's collaboration with the private sector in emerging areas. The vision document will focus the need for the VSSUT to move forward and will lay a path for its development for future.

In order to attract investment from foreign collaborations, honorable vice-chancellor will be requested to incorporate flexibility in the rules and regulations so that short term investment from any overseas organization can be made in VSSUT by signing MOUs .

All the alumni members are requested to provide their valuable suggestions and share their creative ideas for preparing this vision document.

The 2nd Executive Body meeting of VSSUT Alumni Association was held on 18/10/2009(Sunday) at 10 am in Alumni House. The brief minutes of the meeting are as follows.

(1) The executive body proposed to organize a welcome ceremony for our Vice-chancellor on 25th October (sunday) at 11.30 am in the Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall. All the alumni including executive members from sub-centres are requested to attend the function. A press conference will be organized to puiblish the event in media and newspapers.

(2) A delegate of alumni members will meet the Industry minister, Industry Secretary and honorable Chief minister at Bhubaneswar to discuss for additional supply of Govt. Funds for development of our university.

(3) Regular Seminars be organized by Alumni Association with active initiative from alumni members. In the month of December, A national seminar has been proposed to be organized on "Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution" by active initiative of our alumni Er. Ashesh Padhy - GM, Vedanta.

My regards to you all.
We came to know that Dr. Deba Kumar Tripathy who joined as first V.C, VSSUT, Burla on 17 th Sep.'09, on the auspicious day of Viswakarma puja is arriving BBSR to meet Hon'ble Governor on 19th Sep. so requested him that Alumni Assc. wants to welcome and felicitate and he instantly agreed and the time was fixed at 6:30 PM on the same day at Inst. of Engineers building, BBSR.
As scheduled on 19 th Sep.'09,6:30 pm ,Dr.Deba Kumar Tripathy, the first V.C,VSSUT arrived and was given a warm well come by the alumni at Bhubaneswar. The function started with introduction of the dignitaries on dias and welcoming VC with boquet by the senior alumni and then inaugural address by Sri Sridhar Behera, President,Alumni Assc.,BBSR Chapter.

Faculty Interaction Program with VC - A great inititaive for a bright future of VSSUT

The faculty interaction program with Vice-chancellor was a great initiative to build a strong foundation of human resources to act and materialize VSSUT's vision. The Golden jubilee seminar hall witnessed almost a full strength of faculty members in today's event. Prof. P.K. Hota, President of faculty Association, delivered the welcome address and extends his full support and co-operation for all the great initiatives already taken up by our vice-chancellor. Prof. U.R. Jena addressed the gathering as Vice-President and shared his positive thoughts for development of our alma-mater. Prof. R. K. Bhoi expressed concern over the academic dilution in the last few years and shared his vision to raise the teaching and research potential of the University by increasing the Post-Graduate and PhD intakes. Prof. Debu Mishra , HOD Manufacturing Science & Engineering, expressed his faith on the capability and ability of his peers and requested the vice-chancellor to utilize their potential for the upliftment of our university by refraining them from migration to NITs and IITs. Prof. Amar Naik(Civil) has extended his full support for all the constructive initiatives of our vice-chancellor. Prof. U.K. Tripathy(mathematics) stressed on the development of infrastructure for the University. Among the Young faculty members, Prof. Rakesh Mohanty(CSE) requested the Vice-chancellor to organize at least one International Conference every year at VSSUT and stressed the need of quality teaching, integrated interdisciplinary research programs, as well as nurturing of quality teachers for the future. Prof. Arabinda Mohanty(Mech) has requested the Vice-chancellor to encourage and promote faculty participation in research programs and other refresher courses conducted in reputed institutions like the IITs.

After the address of faculty members a memento was presented to our vice-chancellor by Prof. C.R. Tripathy, HOD, CSE. In his address, our vice-chancellor requested all the faculty members to give their best to the students and assured the faculty members to provide all his support in their endeavors. He encouraged each faculty member to apply for research projects and target for at least one International Journal and one international conference research publications per year to raise the research profile of our university. The event was concluded by self personal introduction of every faculty members present in the occasion to the vice-chancellor.

Unitary Technical State University Status for UCE was A Right Move Initiated by NRO Prof. Chitta Baral

Eminent Computer Science NRO Professor Chitta Baral of Arizona State University has justified his proposal for upgrading UCE Burla to a Unitary Technical State University over upgradation of UCE to Deemed-to-be University like KIIT or ITER.

Recently UGC withdraws its earlier permission to deemed-to-be universities to use the word University.

"This means KIIT, SOA(ITER) and other institutions deemed to be universities can no longer use the word â€˜Universityâ€™ in their name. Also, it validates our earlier effort to convince the people pushing to make UCE Burla a deemed university to go for a state university status insteadl. Not only it was easier to get the state university status (the new deemed to be universities applications are frozen for now), but now VSSUT is a university and unlike KIIT and SOA, VSSUT can use the word â€˜universityâ€™" as opined by Prof. Baral.

Prof D K Tripathy born on 1st Oct. 1946 at Baripada, Mayurbhanj. He has passed B Tech from REC Rourkela in 1968 in Mechanical Engineering. M. Tech. in Production Engineering & Technology from IIT Kgp in 1971 and Ph.D. in Metal forming from IIT Kgp in 1981. He joined as a lecturer at REC Rourkela in 1971 and subsequently became Asst. Professor. He joined as Asst.. Professor in Production engineering at the Department of Rubber Technology at IIT Kgp in 1984 and later elevated to Professor in 1990. Since then he is continuing at IIT Kgp. He was also visiting Scientist to North London Polytechnic in 1986. From 2003 to 2005 he has served as Director of NIT, Warangal and has done wonderful works to elevate NIT, Warangal to top 5 rank and his vision still continuing. Since 2007 he was Dean (students affairs) at IIT Kgp.

He has published a number of research papers (more than 150 in international journals and more than 100 in conferences). He has guided 17 nos of Ph D students and at present 5 nos of Ph D students are doing research under his guidance. His research areas are Polymer blends and alloys, rubber engineering, metal forming, unconventional machining, polymer-composites and nano-composites, micro-cellular rubber. He has patent on Elastomeric paid for Indian Railways.There are number of sponsored and consultancy projects under his co-ordinatorship sponsored by various agencies such as Phoenix Yule, DRDL Hyderabad, CSIR New Delhi, BARC Mumbai, DST New Delhi. His noteworthy contribution is development of Jaipur fort for handicapped.

He is a fellow of Indian Rubber Institute, Institution of Engineers (India) and nominated member of IE(India) and ISTAM.He is member of editorial board of several journals both international and national.
